Getting To Know Tubal Ligation |
Tubal Ligation is a medical procedure that has been widely used as a permanent birth control for women. During the procedure, the patient's fallopian tubes are surgically clamped, clipped, burned or cut. This is meant to prevent the eggs to travel to the uterus. Thus, it also stops the sperm to be able to travel through the fallopian tubes.
The surgery can be performed in various forms. They can be through a vaginal approach, through a regular laparotomy approach, through laparoscopy or through minilaprotomy. There are two distinct types of procedure namely the postpartum tubal ligation and interval tubal ligation. The later procedure is not meant to be performed after a delivery.
There are many techniques in which it is performed. The simplest of all was done by Ralph Pomeroy called the Pomeroy type in 1930. This surgery was done using the laparoscopy. The procedure can be done under a local anesthesia or general anesthesia and is often supplemented with tranquilizer that calms the patient throughout the procedure. The least common way is the Essure procedure that is in use from 2002. This method is preferred by most patients worldwide.
The tubal ligation is very effective in preventing pregnancy during the first year after the surgery. However when it is not done correctly, in the years to follow the fallopian tube might reform and can cause unwanted pregnancy. It has a high chance of being able to be reversed. If a method fails, it is highly impossible to detect.
There are certain risks associated with undergoing these surgeries. These risks are, because the fallopian tubes are tied, it may cause infections and uterine perforation. In some cases women become pregnant even after the fallopian tie up which is often an ectopic pregnancy. Other risks associated with it are irregular menstrual cycle and gynecological problems.
The tubal ligation is known to be the best birth control method for women who no longer want to get pregnant permanently. However it offers absolutely no protection from the sexually transmitted diseases or STDs and hence it is important to use condoms if either one of them are diagnosed with a negative STDs.
Performing this procedure is a major operation when compare to the vasectomy. It also carries more risk than vasectomy. The after effects of the surgery are more complicated and involve lot more money i.e. for a surgery it may cost from $1000 to $3000. Moreover, for some patient it may be necessary to undergo this surgery again when the unexpected surfaces. You can consult with your physician to get more information about the detail cost of the operation.
